The Call (from The Call)

COMPOSER’S NOTE

The opening piece from the collection ‘The Call’ which I wrote in Autumn 1997 in the aftermath of the death of Princess Diana.  The collection uses poems which seemed to echo the public’s need for answers to eternal questions.  The title piece The Call uses the words by George Herbert and is a petition for the Way, the Truth and the Life to permeate his and our lives.  It speaks of those eternal virtues which have motivate people in challenging times.

Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life;
Such a Way as gives us breath,
Such a Truth as ends all strife,
Such a Life as killeth death.

Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength;
Such a Light as shows a Feast,
Such a Feast as mends in length,
Such a Strength as makes his guest.

Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart;
Such a Joy as none can move,
Such a Love as none can part,
Such a Heart as joys in love.

Words: George Herbert (1593-1633)
