This Is The Love

COMPOSER’S NOTE

This setting of words by the fourteenth-century English mystic Richard Rolle is the second work from The Fire of Love collection.  The preceding ‘song’ speaks of a fire being kindled within the human soul and This is the Love is essentially a basking in the resultant heat which is the fulness and beauty of God’s love for mankind.  The piano accompaniment must be regular in pulse and even in tone, and the choir should strive for pure vowels and seamless legato phrases.

The Sheet Music for the complete collection of The Fire of Love and the other standalone work This Fire is also available.

This is the Love

This is the love that
Cannot be beguiled
By creature
Or scorned
In heaven.
Its flame works more keenly
Than a burning coal
To make our souls
Both to burn and shine.

He kindles with heat
The wholeness
Of my heart
And with His light
Enlightens all my
Inmost parts.

Words: Andrew Hawes (1954 –  ) adapted from The Fire of Love by Richard Rolle (ca. 1300 – 1349)
