This is the closing movement of The Angel of Mons.  The libretto is adapted from the words of Psalm 107 sung alongside the well-known hymn ‘Glory to thee, my God, this night’ by Thomas Ken.  The Angel of Mons is a choral work describing the apparition of an angel to British soldiers in the first battle of the First World War.

Let Them Give Thanks, sung by the tenors and basses, uses the psalm to convey the soldier’s prayers of thanks for the divine assistance and safe deliverance from a terrible situation.  The hymn, sung by the sopranos and altos at the same time as the psalm is being sung, symbolises the evening prayers of the wives, fiancées and mothers left at home.

Let them give thanks whom the Lord has redeemed
And delivered from the hands of the enemy.
They went astray in the wilderness out of the way;
Hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted in them.
He led them forth by the right way
That they might go to the city where they dwelt.
O that men would therefore praise the Lord for his goodness;
And declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!

Glory to thee, my God, this night
For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath thy own almighty wings.

Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done,
That with the world, myself and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the aweful day.

O may my soul on thee repose,
And with sweet sleep my eyelids close,
Sleep that may me more vigorous make
To serve my God when I awake.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise him all creatures here below,
Praise him above, ye heavenly host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
