Requiem Aeternam

COMPOSER’S NOTE

Requiem Aeternam is the third ‘movement’ from my Lazarus Requiem.  Like many previous settings of the Requiem, for example Campra and Duruflé, this is based on the original plainsong of the Missa pro defunctis (Mass of the Dead).  This captivating melody, with its innate sense of pleading appears first of all in the tenor and bass lines and is then taken up by the whole choir accompanied by lush strings.  With the words ‘lux perpetua’ comes a more optimistic mood and thicker choral textures.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine:
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus Deus in Sion:
et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem.
Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord;
and let light perpetual shine upon them.
We offer thee hymns, O God in Zion;
and unto thee shall a vow be given in Jerusalem.

Words: from the Missa pro defunctis, based on 4 Esdras 2:34–35 and Psalm 64:1-2
