The Last Lullaby
COMPOSER’S NOTE
In 2012 I was very pleased to be asked by Decca Records to write a whole album on the theme of angels. The resulting album – Angel – recorded with the Choir of New College Oxford and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, went straight in at Number One in the UK classical charts.
The Last Lullaby, with words by my brother Andrew, is the final piece on the album and speaks of a final goodbye to a loved one. Prayers are made to the angels that they may comfort, protect and guide both those who are departing this life and the bereaved.

Go to sleep now O true love of mine,
Hold in your heart the comfort Divine;
Angels above you
Guard you and watch you,
Sleepless their vigil can never tire.
With all your memory cherish today,
All we have shared each life-long day:
Angels of light will
scatter the darkness
Tenderly lifting the weight of pain.
You have I loved since we were so young,
With you I sang each beautiful song;
Angels of life
O Give me your voice,
Help me to sing our last lullaby.
