Lavender’s Blue

COMPOSER’S NOTE

In 2011, I was commissioned by Decca Records to produce new orchestral arrangements of several British folk songs for soprano Laura Wright and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for the Number One selling album, The Last Rose.  Lavender’s Blue is the penultimate song in the collection and is based on a beautiful anonymous folk song.

Lavender’s blue, dilly dilly
Lavender’s green
When you are king, dilly dilly
I shall be queen.

Who told you so, dilly dilly,
who told you so?
‘Twas mine own heart,
dilly dilly, that told me so.

Call up your friends, dilly dilly,
set them to work,
Some to the plough, dilly dilly,
some to the fork.

Some to make hay, dilly dilly,
some to thresh corn,
Whilst you and I, dilly dilly,
keep ourselves warm.

Lavender’s blue, dilly dilly
Lavender’s green
When you are king, dilly dilly
I shall be queen.
