DESCRIPTION:A composer’s inspiration  \nAn illustrated talk by the composer Patrick Hawes \n\n\n\n\nPatrick reveals how carefully chosen texts can develop into musical seeds and then into a symphony.  Specific reference will be made to The Great War Symphony\, his most recent work written to mark the centenary of the Armistice. \nThe talk will show how Patrick has selected certain texts to reflect each year of the war\, including Wilfred Owen’s 1914\, Siegfried Sassoon’s diary entry on the first day of the Battle of the Somme\, Margaret Postgate Cole’s The Falling Leaves\, as well as lesser known words from Sydney Bolitho’s Gallipoli and Moina Michael’s We Shall Keep the Faith. \nIt will include an insight into his musical background and influences\, illustrated by Patrick at the piano and through recordings.

DESCRIPTION:Christian Soldiers is an excerpt from the first movement of The Great War Symphony\, a new choral symphony to be written by Patrick to mark the end of the First World War centenary commemorations.  Christian Soldiers is\, in part\, a homage to one of the most celebrated composers of that time\, Edward Elgar\, as well as being a section of a much larger musical memorial to those who fought in the war. \nThis performance by the South West Philharmonia & Chorus features as part of their ‘Last Night of the Proms comes to Plymouth’ in the Plymouth Guildhall.
